SAPS Competency Forms

The journey to obtaining a firearms license begins with obtaining a competency certificate. This form is used to apply for a SAPS Competency Certificate, which establishes that the applicant is competent to own a firearm. To qualify, applicants must pass the prescribed training courses and background checks.

NEW COMPETENCY: Once you’ve written the prescribed tests, and you’ve received your statement of results through an accredited training provider, you’ll need to apply for your SAPS Competency Certificate. Here’s the form you’ll need:

RENEW COMPETENCY: If you need to apply for an extension of your current Competency Certificate, be sure to submit the below form 90 days prior to it’s expiry:

FURTHER COMPETENCY: If you wish to add a further competency to your Competency Certificate, here’s the form you’ll need:

SAPS Firearm License Forms

Once you have your Competency Certificate, you can proceed to apply for a license to possess a specific firearm. These forms require detailed information about the firearm you wish to possess and the reasons for ownership, such as self-defence, sport shooting, or hunting.

NEW FIREARMS LICENSE: Once you’ve received your SAPS Competency, you’ll need to apply for a Firearms License using this form:

RENEW FIREARMS LICENSE: To renew an existing firearm license, you’ll need to apply using this form:

RENEW GREEN FIREARMS LICENSE: If you still have your GREEN Firearms License, and need to apply for a new card license, you’ll need to apply for it using this form:

TRANSFER OF FIREARM OWNERSHIP: If you’re selling your firearm, here’s the form you’ll need to fill out for the new owner.
*Please also see the ‘SAPS Change Of Circumstance’ form, and the ‘SAPS Storage Permit Form’ below, as those forms will apply to you as well!

LOST OR STOLEN FIREARM: If you have lost your firearm, or it has been stolen, use this form to report it to SAPS within 24 hours of the discovery of such:

LOST OR STOLEN FIREARM LICENSE: If you have lost your firearm license, or it has been stolen, use this form to report it to SAPS within 7 days of the discovery of such:

SAPS Change Of Details Forms

If you change any details that pertain to your firearm license, you’ll need to inform your local DFO (designated firearm officer) within 30 days of such a change.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS: If you’ve changed your address, you’ll need to notify your DFO (designated firearms officer) within 30 days of such change. Here’s the form:

*CHANGE OF CIRCUMSTANCE: If you’ve had a change in circumstance in regards to an existing licence, you’ll need to notify your DFO (designated firearms officer) within 30 days of such change. Here’s the form:

INCORRECT INFORMATION: If SAPS has printed the incorrect information on your Firearms License or Competency Certificate, here’s the form to correct your details:

SAPS Permission For More Than 200 Rounds Form

MORE THAN 200 ROUNDS: If you’ve achieved dedicated status, and wish to hold more than 200 rounds for a firearm that is not as yet licensed under your dedicated status, you’ll need to apply for permission to hold more than 200 rounds using this form:

SAPS Storage Permit Form

*STORAGE PERMIT: If you need to apply for your firearm to be stored for a period of time on a premises other than the premises listed on your license, you can apply using this form:
